Commission an Original Icon
I create original hand painted icons using egg tempera or acrylic paints. If you’d like to commission me to create one for you, please personally email me using the contact form on this website with the following details:
- The subject you’d like to have painted (Christ, Theotokos, a particular saint, or feast day, etc.)
- If a single figure, would you like a face portrait, waist up portrait, or a full body?
- The size of the icon you’d like. Standard sizes include: 4×6″, 5×7″, 6×8″, 8×10″, 9×12″, 12×16″. However just about any custom size can be made upon request! The sizing will depend on the composition of the image you want done as well.
- The type of paint(egg tempera or acrylic)*
- The type of board(if choosing acrylics)*
- If you would like a real gold leaf halo.
- If you would like a real gold leaf halo + background in gold leaf.
After you send me an email with all the details, I will provide you with an accurate pricing quote.
Shipping will depend on the size of the icon and will include insurance and tracking with a signed delivery confirmation. Currently I only ship to addresses in the USA. Local pickup is also available if you’re in the area!
*Please read more about egg tempera, acrylics, and types of wood boards here before deciding!
Pricing
Pricing starts at $250 for a small sized(4×6 or 5×7″ icon) and goes up from there, depending on several different factors:
- The complexity of the final image. Is it a whole scene with multiple figures? Or just one saint depicted? Is it the full figure(head to toe?), a half (waist up), or portrait of the face(shoulders up)?
- Size. Just about any custom size can be made. Standard sizes include: 4×6″, 5×7″, 6×8″, 8×10″, 9×12″, 12×16″.
- Gold leaf. The price of gold is high, and it is also not an easy process to apply the gold leaf. A highly reflective “burnished” look can be achieved which takes more time, or a less reflective gold which is easier. Alternatively, gold metallic paint can also be used, or just a regular yellow colored paint.
- Paint type. I can create icons using traditional egg tempera paint(hand mixed powder pigments with real egg yolk), or acrylic paint. There are a few differences with these mediums, and the boards used, which I explain in more details here about the process of creating an icon.
- Board type. This only varies for Acrylics. A pre-made board can be used which is made of medium density fiberboard with cradle support on the backside. This board is more lighter in weight. Alternatively, a higher quality board on Birch Plywood or Baltic Birch Plywood, cut and sanded with hand painted gesso can also be used. *All boards for egg tempera are on Birch Plywood or Baltic Birch Plywood, cut and sanded, with hand made gesso layered on.
